LUCA FARINELLI ARCHITECT
FIFTH AVENUE RESIDENCE
Located in a 1951 Sylvan Bien designed building, with a lobby decorated by Dorothy Draper, this three-bedroom apartment is a calm setting for the owner's modern art collection. From its elevated position above Fifth Avenue in Manhattan's Upper East Side, the residence affords breathtaking views of New York's skyline over Central Park's tree canopies to the West, and of the iconic facades lining Madison Avenue and Park Avenue to the East.
The plan offers a gradient of environments, from convivial to intimate, formal to personal. Spaces are rationalized as they are reorganized, while a sense of depth and layering is achieved through more traditional strategies such as the enfilade.
A neutral and serene material palette of oak, natural stone, lime-plaster and metal creates a sophisticated, timeless backdrop to the art works and exterior views. Minimal but rich details infuse the clean-lined architectural elements and custom built-ins with a luxurious feel. Solid oak floor boards up to 18 feet in length, sourced in Germany's Schwarzwald bring understated elegance to the apartment; artisinal plaster provides depth and texture to its walls; thin, crisp metal elements provide contrast and clean details.
The simple design hides state-of-the-art systems that deliver comfort and amenities. A new central hvac system works with the automated window treatments and lighting to reduce the apartment's environmental impact.
