LUCA FARINELLI ARCHITECT
PLAS TIC TOC
Two spirals, each two meters in diameter, make up Plas-tick-tock. One spiral displays the hours, the other the minutes. As time passes, the plastic arms of the spirals light-up to display the current time. As the day progresses, the spirals grow ever brighter, becoming calling on the public as they take over our common space.
Plas-tick-tock is an alluring installation, attracting the attention of by-passers and exhibit goers. It wants to stimulate the curiosity of those who see it as an abstract installation, before revealing itself. As one learns of the function of the installation and the meaning it carries, one is made to reflect on the effects of plastics in our world.
But while pointing its finger to the thoughtless use of plastics, Plas-tick-tock also fulfills a useful function as a civic time-keeper, a reminder that it is not the material, but its irresponsible proliferation which is problematic.
Plas-tick-tock is a call to action before we run out of time, before the effects of plastic waste spiral out of control.
